People are writing in from all over the world asking what/where/when they should do while visiting San Francisco. Philip Nelson from What Ales Thee podcast joins us for the discussion and takes notes the whole time.

We talk about this from three points of view: the business traveler, the couple or family, and the beer geek. Each group has a different needs in their quest for beer. And while the places may be the same for each we lay out a strategy that might work best for your particular visit.

This is the first of a multi-part series on travel based around beer.

Great show. As a former San Franciscan, it’s nice to see that some of the places I remember are still going strong. SF Brewing Co was the first micro brewery I had ever been to, and going to Safeway and getting Anchor as the local brew was just amazing. Having grown up in Cincinnati all we had was Hudepohl, whose major selling point was it was the cheapest kegs you could find, in college $16 a 1/2bbl was more important than how it tasted, that was in 87-91, but you could go to a bar and get a 2.5gal bucket or Old Milwaukee for $2 too, there was a near riot when they raised that to $3.

If you’re looking for the quick rundown of places to go in San Francisco, listen to the beginning of the “Another Four Beers”. There’s a separate three minute item before the main show starts.

Beer matrix is still under development. DRAFT is available at:

Should get the tourism board to subsidize you. You’re bringing attention to the cultural heritage of the area. See what they say.

Google Map for Northern California Beer Locations!

Beerschool listener David Bruce did a fantastic Google map of all the beer sites listed in my “under construction” beer matrix. I love the detail that has a photo in most of the pop-up markers. Really cool!
