The Eighteenth Amendment

It took activists 75 years to get alcohol products banned from consumer use. Starting after the civil war groups made their way from state to state. A decade after the turn of the century much of the nation was “dry” and it was only a matter of time before government was swayed to put the final nail in the coffin. But it wasn’t just one of these forces at work. It took money, politics, religion, big business, public opinion and a world war to make this happen.

Be sure to check out Ambitious Brew by Maureen Ogle for even more stories of beer and politics.

If you want something that feels like prohibition, how about Utah, the whole state.

Something is wrong with this podcast, about 1/2 an hour in there are 2 conversations going, and it’s not left and right channel.

I second CAA’s comment. It’s around 35 minutes in that it appears you’ve got two audio tracks going at once.

I’ve got once upon a time in America so I can do that part of the homework.

Prohibition: Could we include smoking as one form of prohibition. In cities like Geneva, Switzerland smoking is still commonplace but in London from the 1st of July there’s going to be a smoking ban across the country. It’s already the case in the US, Ireland, Italy and others.

As to the RIAA and other organisations I think they may be losing steam now that Apple and EMI are releasing DRM free music for a little additional amount.

Enjoyed the show and looking forward to the next.

John sent me a note, the podcast has been fixed. I had to redownload it manually, overwrite my existing file, unchecked it in itunes, sync, checked it again and sync again.
One giant pain in the ass, itunes does not handle bad podcasts well.

I listened to most of the podcast anyway so I think I will move onto the next one. I got to hear everything except the error.

The “error” was actually secret backwards-masking in a homage to Led Zepplin. Took us a long time to figure how to throw our voices so it sounded like it did.

Sadly, the Zep’s lawyers threw us a cease and desist order, so we had to edit it out. Still love the band and can’t wait for thier stuff to get up on iTunes.

And wow! Do we have som special shows coming up…

I agree with the recommendation for “Cradle Will Rock”. I usually HATE musicals but I was pleasantly surprised and felt like I was completely entertained by a history lesson.

Bank bailouts, financial ruin, people losing [...]
