A Brewer’s Perspective of Brewing

19 September 2007 3 Comments

A perspective (actually maybe this should be retrospetive instead) of brewing and beer culture going back to 1983. Shaun O’Sullivan from the 21st Amendement Brewery in San Francisco, CA joins the discussion. We talk about the beginnings of the micro brewery revolution, what worked, what failed and the future of craft beer.

the homework is beer but it takes your money to fund the research required to find the next topic.

When you asked the question, “What was your first craft beer?”, I thought, gee, was my first beer ever a craft beer?

I grew up in Boston and came of age after Sam Adams became the commonplace hit it is today, so it was my first beer. I also drank Magic Hat and Berkshire Brewing Company beers regularly in college.

Now in Colorado, it’s New Belgium and Breckenridge Brewery and Denver Pale Ale that are my standbys. I try get something new every time I go to the store.

I never was in the habit of drinking the lawnmower beers…so I’m in the unusual situation of broadening my horizons by trying Budweiser, Coors Light and the other brews that are so familiar to most drinkers.

Thanks for doing the show, guys. I appreciate it and I really enjoy the off-topic discussion. Keep it up.

Ok, yes, I’m from Montana. And no, I do not have to drive hours to get to a craft brewery. In fact, I have two with-in 15 minutes. So Motor you need to make fun of North Dakota, not Montana! Love the show, and if you ever what to trade ales from the Big Sky state for some 21st cans. Drop me a line.

John first things first, That was the Commonwealth brewery over by Boston GaHden that you refered to early in this cast. Sadley it is gone now.
Motor was thinking of Boston Beerworks over by Fenway PaHk. Good news is there is now a Beerworks over near the GaHden as well.
As for first “Craft Beer” I think it may have also been my epiphony beer Anchor Steam.
I am a regular consumer of both Harpoon IPA, Harpoon Ale and recently discovered Sam Adams Pale Ale.

Oh and over the weekend I tried my first Chemay (red) and I HATED IT! as warned. I have a St Bernardist Triple and a Chemay Triple in the fridge and am scared to try them
